Farrell Contracts were contracted by one of Northern Ireland Electricity Networks Framework Contractors to undertake the civil works to the upgrade of the Glengormley Main 110Kv sub stn just outside Belfast.

The works were undertaken inside a 110Kv live operational sub station and required NIE authorisation to access live operational sites along with enhanced health and safety training and procedures to be able to operate and undertake works within the vicinity of live apparatus and equipment.

The project included the following elements of works:

• Demolition of existing building and structures
• Upgrade of existing transformer bays and retrofit bunding works to allow compliance with up to date environmental requirements
• New 110Kv transformer bund and fire wall structure, with Pilot structure steel work
• New 33Kv control building with basement and steel portal frame
• Equipment bases and plinths
• Alteration and new drainage and ducting works
• Phasing of the works to enable transition from old infrastructure to new infrastructure
